What you need to know
Our Training Methods
Studies have shown that you lose a dog’s attention after 15 minutes of training. All of our training dogs begin their day around 6:00 am and train in 15 minute intervals. This process continues all throughout the day with anywhere from 6-10 training sessions a day.
Our training packages begin with 100% positive reinforcement. We teach a dog through repetition and reinforcement, with primary rewards such as treats and secondary rewards such as praise.
While we train obedience with positive reinforcement, once a dog fully understands the behavior, we introduce corrections (consequences). Corrections for every dog vary tremendously. We never correct a dog for something he does not know or understand. A good trainer finds that fine line whereby the correction is just enough to stop willful disobedience.
In addition to pet dog training, The Dog Knowledge trains service dogs for the disabled. Training a dog to open and close a cabinet, retrieve a set of keys, turn lights on and off, sound an alarm, etc. are really only “tricks.” Depending on your dog’s temperament and the training package you select, we have the capability to incorporate fun tricks as a way to get children involved with the family pet and provide mental stimulation for a dog.
Items in bold come under the heading of obedience and all dogs will be expected to master these skills before graduating. Success with additional items listed in each package may depend on your dog’s breed, aptitude, personality, and past experiences.
*Goals you have set for your dog may vary depending on your dog’s breed, aptitude, personality, age, and past experiences. All training packages include an all-day working graduation as well as a lengthy in-home training session, post-graduation.
**”Titles” such as Service, Therapy, CGC, etc are awarded to dogs who have exceptional obedience and temperament.
